HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) Ryan Newman turned a fast lap of 193.124 miles per hour that was nearly a mile and a-half per hour faster than runner-up Elliott Sadler's time in qualifying for Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

It's the first time this season the Penske Racing driver has qualified better than 16th.

Defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, coming off a win in Las Vegas, qualified third.
