TOKYO (AP) _ A strong earthquake jolted northern Japan on Saturday, but there was no danger of a tsunami, the Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the 6.6-magnitude temblor, which struck at 9:03 a.m. off Japan's main northern island of Hokkaido, the agency said in a statement.

Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
