OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Health officials are reporting significant increases in flu and flu-like illnesses in the Oklahoma City area.

Doctor Paul Dungan with the Oklahoma City-County Health Department says a high number of residents are going to hospital emergency rooms with fevers above 100 degrees and other flu symptoms.

Dungan says there have been no flu outbreaks in metro area schools, day care centers or nursing homes and anyone with the flu is encouraged to stay home from work or school for several days.

He also says the flu is hitting the area more than a month later than normal. The flu outbreak usually occurs in January.
