A major pothole repair project is now underway on several busy Tulsa streets. One of the biggest projects right now is on Lewis Avenue from 21st Street down to 41st Street.

News On 6 reporter Emory Bryan says it is an unusual step for the city to bring in extra help to repair potholes.

The city has marked 50 squares that need to be dug out and replaced. Because of that, city officials say it takes more time to repair. So the city has hired an outside contractor to make these emergency repairs. The work will take a little over a week at least, and all the potholes will be cut out, not just patched and then paved over.

"This will stay a little longer than just filling what holes have beaten out, makes it a little sturdier and lasts a little longer,” says Bryan Langston with Becco Construction.

Once that 2 mile stretch of Lewis is done, the work moves to North Mingo from Interstate 244 to 36th Street North and then Yale Avenue from I-244 down to the 36th Street South.
