MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The John Steinbeck classic novel "The Grapes of Wrath" is being turned into an opera.

The story of the Joad family and their move from Oklahoma during the Depression to what they hoped was a better life in California was commissioned by the Minnesota Opera. The Utah Opera is co-producing it.

It opens Saturday in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is also to be performed in Salt Lake City and Houston.

The book was turned into a movie starring Henry Fonda in 1940 and a made for television movie in 1991.
