OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ State Transportation Department officials are considering adding a 511 telephone hotline to provide information about road conditions.

A study by the Oklahoma transportation Center says the 511 number could provide travelers with information on road conditions, construction and major traffic accidents. Much of that information is available by calling a toll free number operated by the Transportation Department but the 511 number would be easier to remember.

Transportation Department Assistant Director David Streb says a study in 2005 found it would cost up to $230,000 to establish a 511 service and about $20,000 a year to operate it.

Officials say 28 other states are already providing the service.
