BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) The U.S. military has reported the deaths of five soldiers in Iraq.
Two were killed by a roadside bomb south of Baghdad Friday. The military statement says their unit was investigating battle positions in the area when the attack occurred. Earlier in the week, the unit joined Iraqi soldiers in raids aimed at disrupting militia activity in southern Baghdad. Those raids led to the detention of 23 suspected militants.
U.S. and Iraqi forces have been preparing for a major security sweep. The aim is to clear the capital of Sunni insurgents and quash Shiite-led militia violence.
Two others soldiers died Friday from wounds sustained in Anbar province. The statement says the wounds were the result of enemy action.
A fifth soldier died Friday of an apparent heart attack after physical training.
