WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chalk one up for Oklahoma's "Pioneer Woman."
After being rejected by the US Commission on Fine Arts last week, a separate panel in Washington, DC, this week recommended the Pioneer Woman for Oklahoma's state quarter.
The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee recommended Oklahoma's quarter feature a design showing the state's outline, an Indian peace pipe and the Pioneer Woman, a statue in Ponca City of a woman and child that honors the state's early homesteaders.
The Fine Arts Commission last week chose a design without the Pioneer Woman, selecting instead a design with the scissor-tailed flycatcher, the state bird, and a field of Indian blanket wildflowers.
The quarter is set to be released next year.
