McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- The McAlester city council says the city owes more than a half million dollars to residents because the city has overcharged customers for water.
City Councilor Sam Mason says the money will be refunded -- perhaps through a credit on future water bills.
Mason and Councilor Donnie Condit say the overcharges are because a 1996 city ordinance that placed a three dollar fee on water services expired in June 2004 but the city continued charging the fee.
About 7,000 water customers are affected.
