TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor is calling on city residents to spend one hour each week mentoring at-risk children.
The effort is part of Taylor's "Mentoring to the Max" proposal to fight Tulsa's growing problem with gangs.
The program is the result of a 62-page Tulsa Gang Summit Report that was developed after a two-day conference last September that discussed ways to stop the spread of gangs.
Taylor's program calls for schools, businesses and community leaders to encourage residents to serve as mentors to at-risk kids.
Bank of America is giving $41,000 in grants to train people to run arts, sports and academic after-school programs at five Tulsa schools.
