NEW YORK (AP) A New York man is being hailed as a hero after saving a teenager who fell on subway tracks today.

Police say Wesley Autrey saw an 18-year-old man fall onto the tracks and jumped down after him. Autrey says he first tried to pull the man up but didn't know if he had enough time.

Autrey says he instead decided to pin the teenager and himself in a rut between the rails so an oncoming train could pass over them.

Autrey says the train operator saw them and hit the emergency brakes. Two of the cars passed over the men. Police say neither man was hit. The teenager, who remains unidentified, was taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition.

Police say Autrey refused medical attention.
