It was a big win for the Oklahoma State Cowboys Thursday night at the Independence Bowl.

In their first ever meeting against one of the most storied programs in college football, the Cowboys won on a last second field goal, beating the Alabama Crimson Tide 34 to 31.

The win is the Pokes' first bowl victory since 2002 and Cowboy fans hope it generates momentum for the OSU program. The win guarantees the Cowboys a winning record this season. They end the year with a record of 7 and 6.

Cowboy fans crowded into sports bars around town to catch the game. Even though they couldn't make it to Shreveport, the News on 6's Omar Villafranca talked with some fans that were rowdy and confident.

OSU fans put their colors on to cheer the Pokes to victory. Many of the fans ducked out of work early, or played hooky, to support their team. Watching the game across a sea of orange, fans liked what they saw. OSU graduate David Gonzales: "I think we're going to do pretty well. I think a lot of critics say weren't not going to do very well, but we have a good offense and the way we were playing the last game, I think we'll shine pretty well."

It wasn't a BCS bowl game, but Cowboy fans say beating a storied program like Alabama is a step in the right direction. "I think it'll mean alot. It is the Independence Bowl, it's not the Cotton Bowl, but it’s still a bowl underneath our belt and we're excited for it.”

OSU graduate Lauren Thomas: "Well, Alabama might have long standing tradition, but Cowboys have heart, and that's tough to compete with."

And in the end, that heart led the Cowboys to a win over Alabama.
