OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma is one of 13 states filing a brief with the US Supreme Court supporting consumers against the insurance industry's use of credit scoring when determining auto insurance rates.

The brief was filed with the court in cases against Safeco Insurance Company of America and GEICO General Insurance Company.

The lawsuits claim both insurance companies violated the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act by not notifying consumers when the use of their credit information resulted in a higher rate. Officials say many insurance companies currently use credit scoring in determining rates for auto and homeowners insurance.

Oklahoma joins Arkansas, California, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Utah and Washington in the filing.

Oral arguments are scheduled for January 16th.
