The uses for duct tape are apparently endless. We know that because of all the stories of people using it in emergencies to hold things together. It is also a good crafting material.
News on 6 reporter Rick Wells visited with a group of teens making wallets, roses, even shoes using little more than a roll of duct tape.
Duct tape is really sticky. A class at the Helmerich Library in Tulsa is making things out of duct tape. This is the second time they've done this; it's a popular activity. "Our class filled up really quick. As a matter of fact we had calls all day." Darla L'Allier is the Youth Services Librarian she says kids like doing this and it's amazing the things they can make. Like a wallet.
One group is watching Maureen O'Keefe make roses. Darla L’Allier: "I've got some guys making billfolds, they looked at a pattern and decided they could." There are pattern books available at the library you can check out and learn to make lots of stuff.
Rachel Hinten is making shoes. "There's a pattern somewhere, but I'm making them up." Rick liked a CD holder, holds six.
This kind of activity promotes the library as a fun place to go with your friends. Darla L’Allier: "And it a place to come and promote literacy, with duct tape." And make some cool stuff, like shoes.
The library has a regular schedule of teen oriented programs. Most of them last from one to three hours. You can find out more on the Tulsa City-County Library website.
