Santa's elves got to work a little early today. The North Pole project gives refurbished home computers to boys and girls whose parents can't afford them.
A non-profit group run by a retired Tulsa police officer gets the computers ready and current officers wrap and deliver them. News on 6 Anchor Lori Fullbright went along for the fun.
They may not look like your traditional elf, but these officers are certainly doing Santa's good work. They are loading up their cars with like-new computers, with all the components and plenty of educational software.
Glenn Deweese started this program years ago in the back room of his house. He had a small plan to give some disadvantaged kids, a free, home computer.
That small plan has turned into this major project. Officers are delivering 62 computers on this one day. And Glenn's non-profit group, P-C power, does many more throughout the year.
All the work is worth it, when an officer knocks on a door, to deliver the computers. Esmeralda has a 14 year old son getting this one. Despite her long days of hard work, there's no extra money to buy a computer.
Esmeralda Rangel, Thankful Mom: "They are vey expensive. I'm excited for him that he's getting one this year. Was excited when called to let me know they were coming today."
Families aren't the only ones who enjoy this delivery day... the officers look forward to it every year.
Officer Kelly Young, TPD: "As police officers, we're out here to protect and serve, but, helping people this time of year, is awesome."
P-C Power also provides free home computers to the students of Tulsa's Cleveland Middle schoola nd provides a computer to each new Habitat for Humanity home built in Tulsa.
