PLAINFIELD, Ind. (AP) Three vehicles, including an armored truck, crashed near the Indianapolis International Airport Wednesday morning, killing three people and leaving coins strewn about the highway, state police said.
One of the vehicles crossed the center median on Interstate-70 and struck other vehicles in the eastbound lanes, said Indiana State Police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten. Police were investigating which vehicle caused the wreck.
A pickup truck involved burst into flames, and coins from the United Armored Services truck scattered around the highway.
The two people in the armored truck and the pickup truck driver were killed. A man, woman and two children in an SUV that was also hit were not seriously hurt, Bursten said.
Bursten said police would not release the names of the victims until identifications were made and families notified.
Representatives from United Armored Services were working to recover the money, Bursten said. United Armored Services is a privately held company headquartered in Broadview, Ill., a suburb of Chicago.
Portions of Interstate-70 a few miles southwest of the airport were expected to be closed for hours, Bursten said.
