OU Regents Alter University's Alcohol Policy

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents slightly alters the school alcohol policy put into effect four months after a student died from alcohol poisoning in October 2004.

Under the change, approved during the regents' meeting Tuesday, students who have one strike under the policy now can request that it be removed from their record if they meet certain requirements.

The policy now requires that students be suspended for at least one semester after a third violation of an alcohol-related law or school rule.

The university put the policy into place in January 2005, after freshman Blake Hammontree's death after drinking at an OU fraternity house.

OU vice president of student affairs Clarke Stroud says making the alteration to the policy is a nod to students "who make an honest one-time mistake."
