Houston and Southern Miss set to play

HOUSTON (AP) The Conference USA championship game is taking place Friday night in Houston with the host Cougars facing Southern Mississippi. The two schools met back on October 14th with the Golden Eagles holding Houston to 38 yards rushing in a 31-27 win in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The Golden Eagles have been the dominant team of the league since its inception, having won four C-USA championships.

The Cougars are playing for their first championship in a decade. Just five years ago they were winless in eleven games but the arrival of coach Art Briles two years later started the reversal of fortune.

The two schools met in the inaugural C-USA title game back in 1996 with Houston winning, 56-49.
