McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- A McAlester man is suing the city over what he says is non-compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Plaintiff John Wilkinson suffers from nerve damage and severe rheumatoid athritis and uses a wheelchair most of the time.
Among his complaints are a curb that's too steep at a local park, small toilet stalls at a local community center and an inaccessible city jail.
The ADA is federal legislation that opens services and employment opportunities to 43-million Americans with disabilities.
Wilkinson contends he discussed the issue with former McAlester City Manager Randy Green in 2003, but no changes were made.
Current city officials say they're making progress on changes and are working to make sure they're in compliance with the law.
