BEREA, Ohio (AP) _ Maurice Carthon is out, stepping down today as offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns.

Cleveland's offense -- the worst in the NFL -- managed just one touchdown and seven points in a 17-to-7 loss to Denver on Sunday.

Carthon was in his second year of running Cleveland's offense, but his head-scratching play calls and personnel moves angered fans and puzzled players.

The team has scheduled an afternoon news conference with coach Romeo Crennel to discuss Carthon's departure.

It's unclear if Carthon quit on his own, or was forced out.

Crennel hired him last year, and had been reluctant to remove his friend.

Carthon played at Arkansas State before joining the United States Football League's New Jersey Generals and the NFL's New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts. He also has coached at New York and New England.
