Oklahoma students and parents have another resource to help keep schools safe. Safe-Call is a 24-hour hotline, sponsored by the state Department of Education.

The phone number is 1-877-SAFE-CALL[723-3225], ext. OK1[651]. All calls are anonymous, and emergency situations are reported to school officials and police within five minutes.

Every school also has a safe school committee made up of administrators, teachers and parents.

The principal at Wilson Middle School in Tulsa says the parent representative is a key part of the team. Dr Oliver Wallace: "he is fully aware of what's going on at Wilson Middle School. And he can assure anyone that we're taking every precaution to make sure the school is safe."

Bullies are often a factor behind students who turn to violence. Wilson administrators say they're working hard to combat that problem, and the district's new uniform policy is helping.
