LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ The only time it matt ered was the only time Texas A&M had the lead.

After trailing the entire game, the Aggies sent Jorvorskie Lane crashing into the end zone on a 2-yard run with 34 seconds to play Saturday, capping an 80-yard drive for a come-from-behind 21-18 victory over Kansas

``Our kids battled hard all day long and found a way to win,'' said Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione. ``We talk about Aggie spirit and that last drive was all about grit and determination. Our defense played an excellent job.''

Stephen McGee, who had 240 yards passing, connected with L'Tydrick Riley on a screen pass over the middle that completely fooled the tiring Kansas defense and went 35 yards to the 5.

``It was the perfect play call by Coach Fran,'' said McGee. ``We caught them empty-handed in that situation. L'Tydrick hit the hole great and the linemen blocked down field. It was a great job.''

Until Lane finished the drive, the Aggies (5-1, 1-1 Big 12) had never led before the rowdy homecoming crowd of 46,445.

``To hear the crowd loud and to finally score and shut them up, it's the greatest feeling in the world,'' said Lane, who also had a 2-yard touchdown run in the first half. ``I told myself, `I've got to score.' And that's all I did. I got the ball and I scored.''

It's the third heartbreaker for the Jayhawks (3-3, 0-2), who lost in overtime at Toledo and Nebraska.

``It happens,'' said fullback Brandon McAnderson. ``You've just got to get over it, get ready for the next week. It's not an unfamiliar position for us, sadly enough.''

Adam Barmann, who passed for 405 yards the week before against No. 22 Nebraska, was only 13-for-31 for 127 yards and consistently underthrew and overthrew open receivers.

``I didn't think any different of him than I do any other quarterback. They're not on my team, so I don't care much about them,'' said Aggie safety Melvin Bullitt.

On three separate possessions, the Jayhawks had first downs on the A&M 22, 18 and 13. But each time they came away with nothing but field goals after Texas A&M's quick, aggressive defense refused to yield.

``We shut them down where they had to resort to the field goal,'' said Texas A&M linebacker Justin Warren.

Jon Cornish, who rushed for 128 yards for the Jayhawks, set up several of the squandered opportunities. He was also stuffed on third-and-1 with under 4 minutes left, forcing Kansas to punt and giving the Aggies the chance for their winning drive.

``We had a few big plays here and there, but I don't know if we prepared for the size of this team,'' Cornish said. ``Nebraska is a big team. But Texas A&M is a very big team. They're also pretty fast, too.''

Barmann's 6-yard touchdown pass to Dexton Fields gave Kansas a touchdown after punter Kyle Tucker's shovel pass to McAnderson went for 48 yards to the 8. It turned out to be the Jayhawks' only touchdown drive of the day.

Cornish, the Big 12's No. 2 rusher, had all but 19 of his 128 yards in the second half and helped Kansas seize an 18-7 lead on Scott Webb's third field goal late in the third quarter.

After Webb's 33-yard field goal put the Jayhawks up 10-0, the Aggies staged an impressive 12-play, 74-yard touchdown drive that consumed almost 7 minutes of the second quarter. Lane scored on his first 2-yard touchdown run to make it 10-7.

Webb's 36-yarder put Kansas on top 13-7 in the third quarter after Cornish broke a 49-yard run to the 18. The Jayhawks got a safety when the Aggies snapped the ball through the end zone on an attempted punt.

Texas A&M freshman Mike Goodson had runs of 24 and 25 yards, and McGee picked up 16 late in the third quarter before he scored on a 2-yard run on a quarterback keeper. McGee then failed on a 2-point conversion run.

``I never felt that we were in sync on offense,'' said Kansas coach Mark Mangino. ``We just weren't sharp, and there are reasons for that.''
