OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ An Oklahoma lawmaker says the state could see dramatic improvement in student performance by increasing funding for a teacher training program.

Representative Joe Dorman of Rush Springs says the Great Expectations program emphasizes an eclectic approach utilizing proven teaching methods.

Dorman says teachers have experienced success while putting the theory of Great Expectations into practice.

Lawmakers provided about $770,000 for scholarships last year, but the number of teachers wanting to enroll the program was more than double the number of scholarships provided.

Dorman says a $2-million appropriation could meet current demand and expected growth.
