An investigation is underway into an accident that killed a Coweta chiropractor earlier this week. It's a case that involves a mayor from Haskell.
The wreck happened around 2 PM Wednesday on highway 72 just south of Coweta. Dr. Shawn Lee was 32 years old and leaves behind a wife, two young children and a small Oklahoma community who knew him well.
Coweta Police says the wreck happened when a car pulled out in front of a semi. That semi swerved into on-coming traffic, hitting Dr. Lee's pickup. Lee was killed instantly.
Investigators say the man that pulled out into traffic was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. He’s now been identified as Charlie Smith, the mayor of Haskell.
Police say they released him from custody so he could receive medical attention. Coweta Police Lt. Donnie Krumsiek: "I don't know where he was coming from. I don't know where he was going. There was evidence collected at the scene that would strongly indicate that alcohol had been used."
Mayor Smith was given a blood alcohol test. Pending those results, investigators will submit their paperwork to the Wagoner County DA who will decide what, if any, charges will be filed.
