Better food in your child's cafeteria, that is the thinking behind a new Tulsa Public School district wide plan offering healthier choices.
After looking at ever expanding obesity numbers, and many kids bringing junk food or no food from home, the district decided to try and make a difference.
The food plan was created by Sodexho, a company that has contracted with several other eastern Oklahoma school districts.
The new five choice plan includes traditional fare, plus salads, fresh fruit and veggies, sandwiches, wraps and lowfat milk. Educators say that combined with calorie content signs is all designed for kids to learn to make healthy choices at an early age.
Hossein Akhtarkhavari with TPS Child Nutrition: "healthy food healthy mind basically. We want to make sure that the kids, one enjoy the meals and two, to eat healthy and nutritious."
The nutrition plan was tested successfully in a few schools last year.
