Health officials report a Tulsa County death linked to the West Nile virus.
Tulsa City-County Health Department officials confirmed the death of a 68 year old male in Tulsa County Wednesday morning.
The West Nile death is the state's fifth of the year. The five West Nile deaths were of people between the ages of 62 and 78 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Carter and Grady counties.
West Nile is a virus most commonly spread by mosquitoes and can cause a flu-like sickness in humans. Officials are concerned about the high number of West Nile fatalities this year and are encouraging everyone, especially older adults, to protect themselves from mosquitoes.
Last year, 31 cases of the virus were reported in the state, with one death.
