LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) -- A man shot and killed a Victoria's Secret employee in a mall Friday evening, and an off-duty police officer fatally shot him in the parking lot as he tried to escape, officials said.
Sherika Broussard, 21, was shot in the head in the store at the Mall of Acadiana, said Cpl. Mark Francis, a Lafayette Police Department spokesman.
"It appears to be a domestic-related incident," Francis said. He did not know the gunman's name.
Mall security guards and off-duty officers working for the mall heard the shots and were running toward the area while store employees were calling police, he said.
"They confronted the guy in the parking lot," Francis said. "He was just about to get to his vehicle. He turned on the officers with the weapon pointed toward them."
Detective Dustin Firmin, who was working an off-duty security job, shot the man, Francis said. Under standard procedure, Firmin will be put on administrative leave during an investigation by Louisiana State Police and take counseling.
