Many of those survivors have decided to make a new start in eastern Oklahoma. That means hundreds of people looking for homes, jobs and schools for their children.
Tulsa Public Schools have enrolled 20 children displaced by the hurricane at 13 different schools. Three are in high school, three, middle school and 14 are elementary students. Two are from Mississippi. The rest are from Louisiana, including six from the New Orleans area.
One of those from New Orleans is fourth grader Erin Chandler. She's joining a class at Eisenhower Elementary. Her mother says the transition has been as seamless as possible. Nancy Chandler: "The school, when they learned we were coming, took up a collection of uniforms so my daughter could start school on the first day with clothes for school, and stuffed animals. And everyone has just been so accepting and so warm."
Erin's new school is almost identical to the one she used to attend in the New Orleans area.
