DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Whirlpool Corporation and Maytag Corporation have signed a formal agreement for Whirlpool to buy Maytag in a more than $1.7-billion deal.

Michigan-based Whirlpool operates a range manufacturing plant in Tulsa.

The merger requires approval from federal regulators and Maytag's board of directors. Whirlpool officials expect the deal to close during the first three months of next year.
