McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- Pittsburg County commissioners are meeting today to consider a special election on a sales tax hike to benefit the Pittsburg County jail and courthouse.

If approved by the commissioners, voters will consider the proposal at an October 11th special election.

It would raise almost $16-million. Funds also would be used for the construction and maintenance of a county animal shelter.

Earlier this year, the Oklahoma State Department of Health warned that the Pittsburg County jail was in danger of being shut down by the state because it is chronically overcrowded.
