Residents of a small Oklahoma town are mourning the murder of a 9 year old girl. She went missing Friday in Okemah, which is in Okfuskee County.

A search turned up her body. 6 in the Morning reporter Omar Villafranca says investigators are still trying to piece together what happened to Katie Middleton.

She was reported missing on Friday and a frantic search soon started. Dozens of volunteers put up signs around town and search parties combed the rural roads around town. Okemah Police say they couldn't issue an Amber Alert, because they did not have a suspect or vehicle description.24-hours after she went missing authorities found her body in a creek southeast of town.

Okemah Police say Katie was last seen leaving a store with 22-year-old William Dobrovolny. He's said to be an acquaintance of the girl, but police haven't given a connection. He was convicted of grand theft auto in California and police arrested him Friday night for violating his parole. He's now being held in the Okfuskee County jail on suspicion of kidnapping and murder.

The Okemah Chief of Police says without the help of all the volunteers, her body might not have been found.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is now awaiting results from the state medical examiner to find out how the girl was killed.
