NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- A group of anthropology students from the University of Oklahoma are getting a hands-on learning experience in eastern Oklahoma.

Assistant anthropology professor Tom Pluckhan is leading an archaeological dig at Lees Creek Mound, northeast of Sallisaw. The American Indian mound dates back about one-thousand years.

The OU group is resuming study of a site last examined in the late 1970s and are looking for signs of habitation around the mound.

State officials have agreements with the Wichita and Caddo nations not to dig actual mounds or their immediate perimeters.

So far, the group has found some bits of pottery and projectile heads, along with a few rock clusters for boiling. Although the discoveries so far are not too significant, the students say the experience is invaluable.
