It might seem early to be thinking about "back to school" but that's what Tulsa’s John 3:16 "Clothes for Kids" program is all about. It's time to sign up to get a free back to school outfit.
News on 6 reporter Emory Bryan says Ericka Davis runs the Klothes for Kidz program at John 3:16. For her, helping children get a new set of clothes for school, is very personal.
Dozens of families are registering their children now for the program, a requirement that must be done by July 22nd. Gwen Morris is signing up her 8 year old daughter. "You get started with one outfit which is really good because that can make a world of difference in kids."
John 3:16 says each one of these new outfits cost them about $10 and this year they're a little behind in their funding, but the need, as always, is just as great. Rev Steve Whitaker with John 3:16: "We really don't have the funding that we need, but we're a faith based organization, and so we go on faith and appeal to the community for funding."
John 3:16 started the program 20 years ago, allowing thousands of children to start school with a new outfit. Gwen Morris: “at least that one new outfit she can put on the first day of school and it just really helps her self esteem to know I have something new and nice and it just starts the year off right."
John 3:16 hopes to go beyond just a new outfit and give children a backpack as well, but right now the most urgent need is for people to sign up, so they will most how great the need really is.
Sign up continues next week at John 3:16’s Mission Center at 2027 N Cincinnati. It runs each day from 9 AM to 3:30 PM.
