OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A study says too many Oklahoma nursing home residents have bedsores or are physically restrained without justification.
The Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality says nearly 17 percent -- or about 3,700 -- people in nursing homes have bedsores. The foundation reports more than 12 percent -- or more than 2,600 -- are restrained without doctor's orders.
A shortage of adequately paid and trained staff is blamed for the problem. The state has 352 nursing homes.
Nursing home leaders meeting in Oklahoma City say they're starting a campaign to decrease the number of residents with bedsore to less than five percent and number of people physically restrained to less than three percent. The group hopes to reach its goals by 2008.
