Every summer, it seems, we report on a young child drowning in a backyard swimming pool.

A Broken Arrow family has added a child-proof fence around its pool, looking for additional safety and for some peace of mind. News on 6 reporter Rick Wells talks to them about the fence and to insurance companies about backyard pool liability.

P.J. is fourteen months old and loves to throw stuff into the familyâ€™s pool. Beth Trook: "balls, goggles, you name it, in the pool, shoes, towels." What his mom is afraid of most is he'll jump in himself when she's not looking. "I don't mind if I'm in the pool and he jumps in at me, but now if I'm in the pool and he's running around he can't get in unless I let him in.â€ He can't because they've added a separate fence around the pool.

Angel Hernandez with Baby Guard Pool Fences: "It provides a physical barrier from anyone, any toddler trying to get into the pool."

The Baby Guard Fence is vinyl with aluminum poles that fit into pre-drilled holes, the sections clip together and the gate has a special P.J. proof latch. Beth Trook: "there's no way P.J. can open the gate whether it's locked or unlocked."

P.J.'s pool is a permanent in-ground pool, but an above ground pools are often temporary additions to the back yard, and putting in an extra fence is difficult. Insurance companies tell the News on 6, having a lockable fence around the yard containing the pool is their only basic requirement.

The game is fun, P.J. tosses the ball in and Mom fishes it out, but for his parents there will more peace of mind this summer.

Insurance company representatives we talked to, tell us there is no extra insurance benefit to a second fence around a pool. They did recommend checking liability coverage to be sure you are comfortable with the amount of coverage.
