MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -- A Poteau man pleads guilty to killing a Hurst, Texas, couple while they were camping in the Ouachita National Park nearly two years ago.
Federal prosecutors say Edward Leon Fields Junior entered pleas Thursday to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of use of a firearm in a federal crime of violence causing the death of a person.
The 38-year-old Fields also pleaded guilty to one count of robbery with firearms and burglary of an automobile.
Prosecutors allege Fields watched 50-year-old Charles Glenn Chick and 47-year-old Shirley Elliott Chick before shooting them with a 22-caliber rifle July 10th, 2003, at the Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area.
Federal prosecutors filed paperwork to seek the death penalty against Fields last year, but it wasn't clear if that's still their intent.
