OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The five members of Oklahoma's House delegation voted with the majority in approving a proposed constitutional amendment to give Congress the authority to ban flag-burning.

Democrat Dan Boren and Republicans Tom Cole, Ernest Istook, Frank Lucas and John Sullivan were among 286 congressmen voting for an amendment Wednesday that says Congress can ban desecration of the flag.

The vote is eight more than the two-thirds needed to send the proposal to the Senate.

The Senate will need 67 votes to keep the bill alive and send it to the states. If approved by the Senate the proposal must then be approved by 75 percent of the 50 states' legislatures within seven years.
