A weekend burglary was an especially hard blow for the victim. It's because she is blind - and the burglars took away some of what she uses to communicate.

News on 6 reporter Emory Bryan says Sandra Spencer considers her computer something of a lifeline. She's blind. Her computer reads the mail to her, at least it used to.

Over the weekend, key parts of her computer were stolen by burglars, while she was out with a friend. Sandra Spencer: "I think they were trying to take the computer because it was taken out and unplugged."

Spencer said some friends who could see the damage said her house near 21st and Memorial was trashed. She believes the burglars must have been spooked before they could leave with all they wanted because the garage door was up and her things were scattered in the yard. "You could just barely walk through here, my friends who were here told me I would never be able to walk through here."

The burglars left behind most of her things, but she figures she’s lost $5,000 worth of software and computer equipment that's only of any use to a blind person. “All of this was completely full and you can see its all bare now."

The burglars even took the vacuum cleaner, but most importantly, took away her sense of security. Now she thinks someone was watching her - waiting to break in.
