OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Trucks carrying tons of Cold War-era uranium waste will be moving their way through Oklahoma this month.

The waste is being transported from a closed government plant in Ohio to a new site near the Texas-New Mexico border.

The trucks will primarily use interstate highways and will travel around Indianapolis, St. Louis and Oklahoma City on highway bypasses.

The trucks will travel across the state along Interstate 40 into Amarillo, Texas, before reaching their destination just north of Odessa.

Officials say the route was chosen for travel time, distance and population along the way to minimize the risk.

The waste will be transported in about 5-thousand large, sealed containers filled with a concrete mixture.
