Mayfest isn't the only art festival in Tulsa this weekend. The Blue Dome Art Festival is downtown as well. A hundred or more local artists will be showing and hopefully selling some of their work.
News on 6 reporter Rick Wells stopped by the Blue Dome District to watch them set up. The Blue Dome Arts Festival, named for the old Blue Dome building at the corner of 2nd and Elgin.
Virginia Harrison is the chairman of it, but she is quick to point out this is a very informal opportunity for local artists to strut their stuff. "We're just focusing on the local community meeting the local artists."
This is the second year for the festival. Last year they had more than 100 local artists participate, about the only rules, whatever you show or sell you had to have made yourself. Many of these folks are like Debi Berry, first timers who've never shown their work anywhere. "Painting is the easy part the rest of it is tough." She's brought lots of paintings.
"This is the first show I've done." Dennis Scott is another first timer; he created some art work on a computer. He's using this show as an opportunity to find out if other folks like them. There will be new artists and more experienced ones, all of them local.
Virginia Harrison: "It's important to celebrate local artists." What they are hoping is Mayfest visitors will save a little time and money and stop by the Blue Dome Festival before they head home.
The Blue Dome Art Festival runs through Sunday in the area bordered by 1st and 2nd Streets and Elgin and Detroit Avenues.
