ENID, Okla. (AP) Students in Enid who participate in extra-curricular activites will be drug tested under a new policy approved by the school board.

The policy approved yesterday includes random tests for tobacco, alcohol, and illegal and performance-enhancing drugs.

Students can be tested up to 12 times per year. Punishment for a positive drug test results in suspension for all scheduled games, competitions, performances or scrimmages for 20, 40 or 88 days.

School officials say the district can't order counseling, but a student's suspension for first and second offenses can be reduced by attending counseling.

The drug testing policy will affect students in grades eight through 12 who want to participate in extracurricular activities.
