Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Boy Scouting. Only about 4 percent of all Boy Scouts progress that far. One of the primary requirements is a service project.
News on 6 reporter Rick Wells talks to a Tulsa Boy Scout about his special project.
14 year old Taylor Levacy is a couple of baby steps away from becoming an Eagle Scout. He's just given Tulsa Speech and Hearing something it really needed, a new sign.
Diana Higgins with Tulsa Speech and Hearing Association: "People had to zoom right past us; they'd always telling us they can't find us."
Taylor's Eagle Scout project has taken care of that and he and Tulsa Speech and Hearing Association have an almost lifelong connection. "I've had to have hearing aids on since I was about 2 years old." They've helped through the years with amplified phones and special smoke alarms for his house so when it came time to plan his Eagle Project. "I wanted to do something to help somebody that had helped me.â€
The new sign was perfect. Most of the materials were donated. The plants he got from Lowe’s. "I got the wood donated from M&M Lumber." The Up with Trees folks helped out with the lettering and last weekend he and a crew of scouts put it up.
It's impossible to talk to him long without focusing on all those decorations and merit badges. "The disability awareness was one of my favorites because I have hearing aids."
He's working on a journalism badge so I brought him to the News on 6 for a quick tour. We talked about TV news and how we put our newscasts together.
Soon he'll be one of Tulsa's newest Eagle Scouts, and for years to come at Tulsa Speech and Hearing he'll be able to say that's my sign I put that there.
Taylor has a couple of small items and one merit badge to go to complete his Eagle Scout requirements. Quite an accomplishment for a 14 year old.
