The Oklahoma House has passed a resolution urging state libraries to removed a controversial children's book from their shelves. The fight over the book "King and King" is because it has a homosexual theme and deals with two princes marrying each other.
The book's publisher says it's appropriate for children ages 5 to 7, but Alan Woodland disagree. He read the book when his 5 year old daughter picked it up at the library. “At first I didn't want to be an overprotective parent. I though we could educate her, but then when I saw the contest, the way it was portrayed, and then I realized it was just inappropriate content for our daughter to stumble on."
The lawmaker who pushed for the resolution is now trying get it turned into a law.
The Tulsa City-County Library system has two copies of the book "King and King." Both are checked out.
Some parents say having books with sensative themes within a child's reach is out of line. The City-County libraries say they won't stop stocking the books, but think they've found a way to respond to parents' concerns.
The staff at the the downtown library is making space for their new Parenting collection. They'll move books like "King and King" to this section, but won't re-move them, just because they have more sensative topics.
The City-County Libraries always encourage parents to come to the library with their children, to pick out books that are appropriate for their families, but library CEO Linda Saferite says she feels the books are right where they need to be. "We believe that Tulsans should be deciding books are here in Tulsa for us to read. It's important that children's books remain in the children's collection."
