McALESTER, Okla. (AP) A recall election for two city councilors has been set for Sept. 13.

City Clerk Bobby Lanz determined that recall petitions contained enough signatures to schedule the election for councilors Louis Smitherman of Ward 6 and Michael Dawkins of Ward 3.

Residents began the recall effort after former City Manager Randy Green received more than $500,000 in a buyback of unused leave time.

The petition alleges Dawkins and Smitherman failed in their duties by approving Green's contract, leading to gross neglect. Both men have denied the allegations and have protested the recall in district court.

Their attorneys want the court to rule on the merits of the petitions, but no hearing has been scheduled.

The FBI is investigating several amended contracts that Green convinced council members to sign. He is alleged to have accrued an extra 33 days of leave for each amended contract.

Green said he committed no crime because the council approved each contract.

The city council voted Jan. 5 to suspend Green for 20 days and then fire him.

Mayor Dale Covington and Vice Mayor Charles Repass resigned in January.
