Men have been going on camping and fishing trips for years, so why shouldn't women do it too, if they'd like. A group of women, who are fly fishing fans from out West, are doing just that.
News on 6 reporter Rick Wells met up with them Friday morning in Kellyville.
Maurrie Sussman, her mother Mazie and sister Becky love to fly fish. Years ago they discovered it was easier if you hauled your bedroom around with you. So Maurrie bought Lucy. “Lucy is this little trailer right here." It's not one of those sleek new travel trailers; they look for the 50's vintage models and then rebuild them. "You have to put in new floors and replace all the veneer, that's easy."
These are just basic trailer, nothing real fancy. In fact they do them up in basic cow girl, paint them up and make them comfortable. There's a propane stove and an ice box and well, cowgirl stuff.
Maurrie and Becky's family fishing trips grew into a national group they named, Sisters on the Fly. "It's about teaching women to be free and have fun." After all as she says men have been doing this for years. They are traveling across country meeting some of the group members they don't know.
In Kellyville they are picking up Nita Denham, she'll go on with them to Hot Springs and maybe on to Tennessee. "One of the sisters is hosting a picnic for us in Memphis." Eventually they'll end up in Annapolis, Maryland.
First they want to see a bit of old Route 66, so out of Kellyville, they headed toward Sapulpa across the old bridge. Now it's on to fun and good fishing.
