PICHER, Okla. (AP) _ Birds in the Tar Creek Superfund site in northeastern Oklahoma have been found to suffer zinc poisoning.
A government study examined 13 species of birds in the 40-square mile area that's contaminated by waste left over from lead and zinc mines that operated during much of the 1900s.
U-S Fish and Wildlife Service biologist John Miesener says the study doesn't define how big the problem is and the next step would be to determine how many birds are affected. Miesener says there are no such plans in the works.
