MARTHA, Okla. (AP) -- A portion of a 1940s-era bridge over the Salt Fork of the Red River collapsed under the weight of a garbage truck, but nobody was injured in the incident.
One span collapsed behind the truck as the vehicle moved across the 600-foot bridge on Friday. The truck was able to continue to the other side and make it off the bridge.
"It's just lucky the truck didn't stall and fall back into the river and somebody get hurt or killed," Jackson County Commissioner Dale Dunn said.
The truck weighs about 30 tons and the weight limit on the bridge is 13 tons, but Dunn said signs indicating the limit had been torn down. It could cost more than $2 million to rebuild the span.
