LAWTON, Okla. (AP) -- Comanche County commissioners voted to rename Squaw Creek after concerns were raised that the name is offensive to Indians.
The creek runs from the Fort Sill Old Post Quadrangle about nine miles into Cache Creek.
Jan Woomavayah said Comanche tribal elders suggested renaming the creek "Numu," a Comanche word that means "the people."
County commissioners are expected to pass a resolution on April 25, after which their suggested change will go to the U.S. Board for Geographic Names. It could take anywhere from six to eight months before the name change is approved.
