OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ The Oklahoma Highway Patrol will step up enforcement of traffic laws on the Turner Turnpike between Oklahoma City and Tulsa for the next several weeks.

Lieutenant Don Stockton says on Sunday troopers will start ``Project C.R.A.S.H,'' or Collision Reduction and Safer Highways, on the turnpike which is also Interstate 44. The operation will continue through mid-June.

Stockton says special enforcement teams will be stationed along the turnpike to watch for speeders, unsafe lane changing, unsafe cars and trucks and inattentive drivers.

The OHP says the project was developed after the number of fatalities on I-44 jumped from four in 2003 to 14 last year.

In conjunction with Project CRASH the Oklahoma Transportation Authority will be performing routine maintenance and Stockton says drivers should remember that fines double for traffic violations in construction zones.
