CLINTON, Okla. (AP) -- City officials in Clinton are still trying to figure out what's happening to millions of gallons of water that's unaccounted for.
Officials thought they solved the two-year-old mystery, but a series of new water count numbers has dashed their hopes.
The problem dates to September 2003, when more than 25 million gallons came up missing. That's the difference between water apparently entering the city's distribution system and water that customers are using.
Two months later, city officials thought they were close to solving the mystery when the discrepancy was narrowed to less than one million gallons.
But Clinton's public works director says those numbers have fluctuated dramatically ever since.
City officials believe 9.7 million gallons were lost in December, 11.2 million gallons disappeared in January and 9.3 million gallons were gone in February.
